As a professional home security system consultant (and business security systems) I have gotten this question quite often. My first response is “there is a reason why almost all major insurance companies give such a large discount (some require it) when you have a monitored security system”. Most companies give even deeper discounts with added fire protection/monitoring.

The reason is, she was upstairs in the shower when her siren went off and she discovered her back door was kicked open. A few minutes later her neighbor told her she witnessed a man with a pistol in his hand running away from her house. We don’t want to imagine what may have happened if he wasn’t scared away from the siren!
