Dressing For Your Safety
Have you ever thought about how you choose to dress and accessorize impacts your personal safety? If you’re like me, the answer to that question is likely, “No.” Your mind may then go off on a tangent that goes something like, “Are you crazy! Are you insinuating that by dressing provocatively, I’m asking for trouble, or deserve it if trouble comes my way?” “You can’t be suggesting that I dress like a nun!” The reactions are endless and I want to start by saying that I share your reaction to comments of this nature. However, I would like to point out a few things for all women to think about and consider.
- How fast can a person run in 3-inch heels? 5-inch heels? If you can sprint quick enough to outrun a potential attacker, then by all means, wear those heels. However, if you cannot, consider wearing tennis shoes when walking from your car to your office, it may not be all that fashionable, but it is safer and easier on your feet. As a bonus, think about purchasing a pair of those new toning tennis shoes and get a work out in while you walk.
- How fast can you run in a tight skirt? If you can’t take a normal stride in the skirt, how are you going to be able to run away from a potential attacker? Save the sexy, tight skirt for date night when you will be with your significant other and less likely to be pursued by an attacker.
- Do any of your accessories provide the opportunity to grab you? Do you wear scarves that trail after you? How do you carry your purse or hand bag? Close to your body, or away from your body?
The purpose of this article is not to suggest that you begin dressing like a nun, or very conservative. You can still dress as stylishly and sexily as you’d like. Just consider your outfit before you walk out the door:
- Can you wear tennis shoes on your way to the office and then put on those 5-inch heels after you arrive at your destination?
- Does your clothing provide you with the ability to run, if necessary?
- Place that scarf that you want to wear, in your handbag and put it on once you’ve arrived at the office.
- Carry your purse and business tote close to your body.
Do with this information what you will. My hope is that, at the very least, this information will be stored in the back of your mind, and while you get dressed in the morning, or for a night out on the town, you will consider how your outfit impacts your personal safety and make any necessary adjustments. Be creative. Just because you can’t run fast in those Louboutins, doesn’t mean you can’t wear them out anymore. Put a pair of flats in your purse and switch them out when you walk home.
